11/10/11 class

After yesterday's class I really started to think, gaining knowledge of technology, and social media is not just an advantage, but a necessity. The tide of technology and it's implications is unavoidable. Whether you feel the change is good or bad, the times are a changing. After the discussion I realized that the concept of A.I. is already being used and will continue to progress. The fact that browsers track and adapt advertising to individual preferences just blows my mind. Rheingold pointed out that every individual will soon have a super computer in the palm of their hand is coming true. Every aspect of our lives have been touched by the technological revolution. From our personal information being placed into a database, to sharing our inner most thoughts via social media for the world to see. It is becoming very apparent to either a person adapts and embraces the change or be left behind. Look at my Father, three years ago he had trouble turning on the computer now he posts updates like a pro, and he is over 70 years old. That brings me to my second point. I was shocked to learn that a teenager was imprisoned for a "riot" joke. That fact has already reverberated in my life. I was never a big poster, but now I realize that my words carry a great deal of weight and should chosen carefully. Employers are able to find you on Facebook, and make employment decisions on the basis of character. That has been a huge rude awakening. I am not sure how I feel about this redesign of social etiquette based upon social media, but I am sure glad that I have become more aware.

  1. You are completely and a hundred percent correct. I agree that technology and social media is a neccessity now. Children are growing up with technology around them and even toddlers are aware of it. Kids now know and learn how to function them as well as adapting to them as a neccessary part of their life. I see young kids with Iphones, laptops, Ipad or playing game systems like they're a pro at it (and they probably are). Its more acceptible with every generation and is now a neccessity for making schedules, and accomplishing tasks (homework, assignments, projects, meetings, etc.). To be honest, I don't think I can see the world without technology or social media. We would have to go back to the old days. Accomplishing something would take so much longer. Maunfacturing and buisnesses would not exist therefore people may even starve or war can break out.

  2. I think we have really subconsciously known all along about being tracked, it is just hard to probably phathum, or is it we as individuals think we are just a needle in a haystack and chances of being found or sought after is slim to none.
